Newfoundland CANADA 2010

The Parsons originally came from Newfoundland, as did the Andersons, my wifes people.  So going to Newfoundland was a trip into both of our pasts - a 'Heritige Trip' if you will.  I thought it was important for us to go as a family to experience and understand where our roots were grounded.

We had a wonderfult trip, met lots of great people along the way, and were very glad we made the effort.  Newfoundland and Newfoundlanders are special.

  • West Point - Newfoundland - Canada; Our Final Destination

After hearing the stories for years we are finally able to visit the place.  Not sure what we expected but it more than lived up to what we expected.  Weird statement I know, but don't know how else to put it.

  • Rose Blanche - The village at the End of the Road.
No roads go to West Point but we drove as close as we could.  This village is where the road ended.  From here we had to either fly, boat, or hike.  Great song on this video by the way.
  • Harbor Le Cou
I loved this song.  We rented a house in this small village for a few days and I looked everywhere for the 'sandy beach' that is mentioned in the song.  Rocks everywhere.  However, a local did point out where there once was a little sand.  They don't call Newfoundland 'The Rock' for nothing!
  • Bitz and Piecez - Pictures taken along the way.
This is a bit of a potpourri of pictures taken along the way.  Random shots that I found interesting or a memory that I wanted to remember.
  • Cape Spear - The Eastern-most point in North America

The audio is the most important part of this video.  The Newfoundland people are distinct in many ways and the author trys to speak to that in this piece.  Somewhat dark but illuminating at the same time.

  • All The Week Round - Great Song by a Blind Newfoundland Singer
This one is here for the song.  The video is from our departure at Port-Au-Basques but the song makes me laugh every time I hear it.
  • And We Were Sailors
The video here is from Cape Spear but it is the audio that matters.  Another insight into what it means to be from Newfoundland.

Additional Information

All the video and stills were shot by Betty and I.  She usually does the camera work (Nikon D70) and I usually do the video  (Sony AVCHD 16GB).  Audio comes from various CD's accumulated along the way.
